About This Competition
Eredivisie is the highest professional football league in the Netherlands. It is also known as the Dutch Premier League. The league was founded in 1956 and currently consists of 18 teams. The season usually starts in August and ends in May of the following year. The Eredivisie is known for its attacking style of play, which makes it one of the most exciting leagues in Europe. The league has produced many talented players over the years, including Johan Cruyff, Marco van Basten, and Dennis Bergkamp. The top two teams in the Eredivisie qualify for the UEFA Champions League, while the third-placed team enters the UEFA Europa League. The bottom two teams are automatically relegated to the second tier, while the team that finishes in 16th place enters a playoff with teams from the second tier to determine if they will be relegated. In recent years, the Eredivisie has been dominated by Ajax and PSV Eindhoven. Ajax has won the league title 35 times, while PSV Eindhoven has won it 24 times. Feyenoord is the third most successful team in the league, with 15 titles to their name.
